AU leaders gather to debate Somali conflict

African Union leaders Sunday gathered for a summit in Kampala to debate a more robust military presence in Somalia following deadly attacks here claimed by Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents.

The summit observed two minutes of silence for the victims of the July 11 attacks in the Ugandan capital that killed 76 people as they watched the football World Cup final..

“The African Union stands with you, my brother President (Yoweri) Museveni, and with the people of Uganda,” Bingu wa Mutharika, Malawi’s president and current chairman of the AU, said in his opening remarks.

Mutharika condemned the perpetrators of the blasts that killed 76 “in the strongest terms.”

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir stayed clear of the summit, AU sources told AFP. The International Criminal Court had added genocide charges to Bashir’s indictment earlier this month and Uganda, a member of the court, would be compelled to arrest him.
